Friendship

‘A friend is a little light in the darkness of life.’

Definition of friend: a person whom one knows well and likes.

I think that a friend is more personal than that. A friend is someone that you can rely upon, who you can go to in times of trouble, who you know will never betray you, someone you can trust with your life. A person you consider family.

I know different people have different views on friendship because of how they have been brought up or experiences that they have had, but I feel that no matter what, the definition of a friend is always the same. It’s just that we don’t realise it.

A friend is a person that is always willing to listen, even if you have nothing to say. They except your views on things and don’t judge you. A friend is someone who tries to make you a better person, who doesn't force you to do something you don’t want to, who doesn't make you feel rubbish as if you need fixing, but brings out the good side, and help you live life to the full. A friend is someone who loves you for being you.

If someone claims that they are a friend but try and change you into something that you’re not, then they're not your friend, they are just another person who looks at you and only sees the negatives. They are someone you shouldn't take notice of what they say as they don’t actually know you, and don’t care to get to know you before they make the accusations.

A good friend doesn't necessarily have to be a best friend, but one you can rely on, someone who you are confident to confide in and express your honest feelings and opinions to. Sometimes that friend may not do the same to you, but as long as they listen, they are worth keeping. They may not hold you as highly as you do them, but they will always tell you the truth, not what you want, but what you need to hear. They will comfort and walk through life beside you. If they go ahead and see you struggling, they will take that step back to help you even if it delays them. They will always have your best interest in mind and never the opposite.

You know when you have found a true friend, I can’t explain how, but you JUST know. Sometimes it will take a while for you to realise, sometimes you know instantly, other times you may never even know. When you find a friend, you will least expect it, true friendship isn't forced, it is given, even if you don’t want it. When you have someone that you can rely on, don’t push them away, hold them close like a piece of china. You will always need a friend in all the pains throughout life and I hope and pray that you have one.

A friend will always encourage you to do what is right and reach for the stars. And a true friend will always hold on.
