It's Way Past My Bed Time
‘Ok, I’m
going to bed.’
That’s what
we all say at that dreaded time of the day. But, what really happens when we
say it?...
9pm – get
into bed
9.01pm –
take out phone
10pm – still
on phone
11pm – still
on phone
12am – still
on phone but notice time
12.01am –
say you’ll watch only one more YouTube video
Half an hour
later
12.30am –
finally put phone down
12.45am –
can’t sleep
1am –
finally fall asleep
How is it
that most of us set off with good intentions when we say we are going to go to
bed early, yet we all fail miserably and end up going to bed much later than we
intended? Well the answer to that is our phones. When we go to bed early and
look at our phone, we think, “Hmmmmm, well … I’m going to bed earlier than
usual so I have time to go on my phone quickly.”
That’s the
first mistake we make. Once we pick up our ‘best friends’ there is no going
back. You have officially entered the end zone, the zone you will never exit
until the early hours of the next day. No matter how much we promise ourselves
we won’t stay on our phones for too long, it will never happen. The second you
pick up your phone you’re captivated, your phone is an addiction. We may not
admit it, but it is.
But why? Why
are our phones the unknown addiction of our lives? Well, it’s quite simple
really. Our phones have Wi-Fi, internet, games, applications… the list can go
on. But the biggest culprit, if we’re honest with ourselves is YouTube. If
you’ve got a YouTube account you’ll understand how it is the most important
thing to watch all the videos in your subscription box as well as watch all the
viral videos mention in the videos. And check out YouTuber’s and videos your
friends have recommended as well as check out all the latest music videos. With
just YouTube alone, half the night is already wasted, but what makes it worse
is the fact that we will also be checking our feed on other social media sites
such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Whatsapp, Viber and the list goes on.
But that’s not
the end of it; we also religiously play games before and after. The world of
our phones has become such a huge part of our lives that it’s starting to take
over. Not just our bedtime but our daily lives. I can honestly say that I can’t
go a day without going on my phone at least twice. It’s literally impossible. It’s
no wonder I feel tires nearly every day. The sad thing is that before the internet
literally became my best friend, I used to read for hours upon hours before I go
to bed; I used to be a book nerd.
So I challenge
you, for a whole week, to go to bed and sleep, WITHOUT going on your phone. See
how much more sleep you will get.
Ellah xx
